Starting a Diet Routine?

How do I start losing weight or becoming healthy?  The question is very basic, but many people go about the answer all wrong.  Who can blame them the news, magazines, TV, radio, and the internet all tell you to do something different.  What is missing from the weight loss plans or get fit plans is that all the focus is on what you shouldn’t do.  That’s all we hear and that’s what we focus on ”what do I have to sacrifice,” “I can’t eat my favorite foods,” “I won’t have time to watch TV.”  As you begin your workout it is our minds that creates the biggest hurddle in our trekk to being more healthy.  Here’s three essential tips to getting yourself motivated and starting your road to better health.

Celebrate the foods you love - This may sound strange when you are trying to lose weight, but there’s no need to go cold turkey.  Before you start your diet indulge yourself in the foods pizza, fried chicken, a bacon wrapped hot dog, ice cream, nachos…whatever it is give yourself a chance to say “I love you but we are smoothering each other and one of us could die from it.”  Use the foods that you love in small portions like using a couple slices of bacon to flavor a large pot of soup or use a small scoop of ice cream on your strawberries.  Everything in moderation.
Hold yourself accountable - Just imagine if you went to work and your boss was never there and you didn’t have to turn your work into anyone?  Sounds great right? How hard would you work?  How productive would you be?  Not if you are are trying to meet diet and fitness goals.  Tell your good friends and family about what you are doing to reach your weight loss and health goals and ask that they help you stay on track.  Don’t obsess about every pound or everything that you eat.  Know that there are times that you don’t stick to your schedule or daily goal, but you want to still hit your goal at the end of the month.  Be accountable, you made your health and fitness goals for a reason.
Keep it real - Forget about all the celebrity bodies and keep your goals focused on  you.  Angelina Jolie or Jessica Biel may provide inspiration, but should not be your focus of what you want to look like.  Instead, use a photo of what you used to look like when you were happy with your looks, or make goals like losing two pant sizes.  A safe and realistic weight loss goal is to lose one to two pounds a week.  That means eight pounds a month.  Your goal should be to gradually lose weight and more importantly body fat over several months until you reach your goal.
Keep all these points in mind when you are starting your diet routine.  Getting started is the hardest part.  Make changes that can last a lifetime and it will become a part of your life rather than a battle against reaching a weight goal.
